Mathematical Programming (MP) models are, and should be in practice, important components of any optimum-decision support system (DSS). A DSS can be created for any decision problem whose mathematical model can be constructed appropriately and which should be solved either optimally, using appropriate mathematical programming techniques, or almost-optimally using certain heuristics. The ultimate goal is for a fully utilizable DSS to run under the environment of state-of-the-art computer software.

The sample interactive decision support system (IDSS) runs under the AIMMS platform. It demonstrates the benefits derived from information technology (IT) in facilitating not only the acquisition (using specific numerical solvers) but also the online presentation (through computer graphical user interface (GUI)) of important results of mathematical programming methodologies in the solution of certain optimization problems. It also demonstrates how a modeler, in developing a DSS using AIMMS, can provide the decision-maker (the end-user of DSS) with the most user-friendly interactive support for taking an optimum decision.
